Ice Cave Exploring with a Local
A genuine mountaineering experience led by Reynir, a dedicated local guide (often accompanied by his friendly dog). Escaping the crowds in a modified Land Cruiser, this micro-group tour (max 6 guests) involves a rewarding 5-6 km hike across the glacier to find hidden ice caves. It is an active, flexible adventure for those who want to see the ice as locals do—on foot and without the rush.

Overview
This is the antidote to the "conveyor belt" ice cave tours. There are no buses and no strict timetables—just you, a small group of six, and a local expert who knows the glacier’s ever-changing terrain by heart.
The day begins with a Super Jeep ride to the glacier's edge, but the real journey is on foot. You will strap on crampons and hike deep onto the ice, navigating through blue crevasses and moulins to reach a natural ice cave. Because the group is so small, the itinerary is fluid; Reynir adapts the pace to the group and the conditions. If the group is up for it, you might explore a hidden canyon or stop to drink pure glacial water straight from the source. It’s a raw, personal, and unscripted look at Vatnajökull.

We booked a whole day tour and went to 2 tunnels and 2 caves. It was absolutely amazing and the guide made sure at any point that everyone was feeling well and safe. He brought his dog which made the experience even better. Would 100% recommend booking the tour and really feel like a glacier explorer and avoid crowds!
My partner and I were the only ones on this trip with Reynir and his dog Myrkvi. It was fantastic. I was at some glaciers around the world but it is something completely different to be on and in one. Even though the tour was slightly more than 5 hours it was never boring. Reynir explained everything and answered all questions. We also got information about Iceland and its people in general. It was fun to have Myrkvi with us.
Our tour with Reynir (and his beautiful dog Myrkvi) was a once in a lifetime experience. He took our small group on the Vatnajökull glacier, carefully timing everything so we had the entire glacier to ourselves and completely avoided the crowds. Unlike the larger tours, Reynir guided us to spots that most visitors never see. We explored the popular Sparkle Cave, however arrived at the perfect moments for crowd-free, uninterrupted experiences.
Reynir is the BEST!! This hike was one of the coolest things we have done on our visit to Iceland. Cannot talk about him and his tours enough. He has YEARS of experience and loves what he does. Plus, he has the only glacier dog in the national park...Myrkvi was a great addition to the tour!
